  • Expanded coverage of regulation of gene expression. Previously covered in a single chapter, regulation of gene expression is now divided into coverage of bacteria in Chapter 15 and coverage of eukaryotes in Chapter 16.   • Coverage of CRISPR-Cas is now integrated in multiple chapters. The impact of genome editing is briefly introduced in Chapter 1. A basic overview of how the mechanism works in bacteria is covered in Chapter 15. Applications to biotechnology are explored in Chapter 17. Essays that used to be known as Genetics, Technology, and Society have been replaced or revised as Genetics, Ethics, and Society. These boxes illustrate how genomic studies have an impact on every aspect of genetics.   • How Do We Know? questions appear as the first entry in the Problems and Discussion Questions and ask students to identify the experimental basis underlying important concepts and conclusions–that is, how we know what we know. Students are asked to review numerous findings discussed in the chapter and to summarise the process of discovery that was involved.
  • Insights and Solutions sections strengthen students’ problem-solving skills by showing step-by-step solutions and rationales for select problems.
  • Essential Points, integrated throughout each chapter, draw student attention to key issues and concepts that have been discussed in the text, helping them identify important information.
  • A Concept Question, found as the second question in the Problems and Discussion Questions, asks the student to review and comment on common aspects of the Key Concepts listed at the beginning of each chapter. This feature places added emphasis on the pedagogic approach of conceptual learning.
  • Evolving Concept of the Gene is a short feature, integrated in appropriate chapters, that highlights how scientists’ understanding of what a gene is has changed over time. Since we cannot see genes, we must infer just what this unit of heredity is, based on experimental findings. By highlighting how scientists’ conceptualisation of the gene has advanced over time, this feature helps students appreciate the process of discovery that has lead to an even more sophisticated understanding of hereditary information.
