Features & benefits
  • The visual approach breaks out of the text-heavy model that all other one-semester A&P textbooks follow. Instead of long columns of narrative text that refer to visuals, this book has visuals with brief “chunks” of text built around them. Students can’t read without seeing the corresponding visual, and they can’t look at a visual without reading. This book has true text-art integration.
  • The modular organization presents topics in two-page module spreads. On each spread, the top left page begins with the module number and module title, the bottom right page ends with a set of self-check questions, and the text-art presentation fills the rest of the spread. These two-page spreads give students a predictable learning path. They also give students an efficient organization for managing their time as they study each chapter, one module at a time. Students can study each module during the limited time they have in their busy schedules—ten minutes for one module now, ten minutes for another module later—checking off each module as they complete it. Within each chapter, related modules are organized into sections that begin with a section-opener page and conclude with a section-review page.
    • Step numbers and manageable "chunks" of information guide students through complex processes.
    • Red-boxed numbers guide students through the presentation of the topic.
  • Frequent student practice is encouraged and supported throughout the chapters:
    • Module Reviews conclude each module with brief questions that check understanding of facts and concepts.
    • Section Reviews include a wide variety of “workbook-style” review activities—such as labeling and concept mapping activities—that ask students to recall and demonstrate their understanding of facts and concepts across several modules.
  • Chapter Reviews include three sections. In the Visual Outline with Key Terms, every module review contains an image to remind students of the module’s key concepts, a statement of the module’s key teaching point, and a list of terms to help students review the module’s content. The Career Paths feature introduces students to the daily working life of someone in a relevant career they might consider pursuing. Chapter Review questions ask students to think critically about clinical situations that tie together concepts from the chapter.
  • Learning Outcomes on the chapter-opening page correspond by number to the chapter modules, giving students an easy learning path and instructors an easy vehicle for assessment.  The learning outcomes are derived from the learning outcomes recommended by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).
  • Clinical material is given prominent attention in two-page modules, on par with the other chapter modules, rather than in the less important “sidebars” of other one-semester A&P books.
  • MasteringA&P® from Pearson has been designed and refined with a single purpose in mind: to help educators create that moment of understanding with their students. The Mastering online homework and tutoring system delivers self-paced tutorials that provide individualized coaching, focus on your course objectives, and are responsive to each student’s progress. The Mastering system helps instructors maximize class time with customizable, easy-to-assign, and automatically graded assessments that motivate students to learn outside of class and arrive prepared for lecture. By complementing your teaching with our engaging technology and content, you can be confident your students will arrive at that moment—the moment of true understanding.

         MasteringA&P:

    • Lets instructors easily assign Reading Quizzes, Chapter Tests, Art-based Questions, Art-labeling Activities, Practice Anatomy Lab (PAL) Test Bank Questions,  and Coaching Activities based on Essentials of Interactive Physiology®—all automatically graded.
    • Provides students personalized coaching through answer-specific feedback and hints.
    • Motivates students to come to class prepared.
    • Easily captures data to demonstrate assessment outcomes.
  • The MasteringA&P box at the end of every chapter shows students the resources that are available in the MasteringA&P Study Area for self study. This MasteringA&P box lists chapter-specific material for the Practice Anatomy Lab (PAL) 3.0 virtual anatomy lab, the Essentials of Interactive Physiology physiology tutorials, and the MP3 Tutor Sessions.
Author biography

Frederic (Ric) H. Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. He is currently an affiliated faculty member of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Martini is a President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) after serving as President-elect, President, and Past-president over 2004-2007. He was a member of the HAPS committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for A&P. He is the lead author of nine undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy, all published by Pearson.

William C. Ober received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University and his M.D. from the University of Virginia. While in medical school, he also studied in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. After graduation, Dr. Ober completed a residency in Family Practice and later was on the faculty at the University of Virginia in the Department of Family Medicine. He is currently an Affiliate Professor of Biology at Washington and Lee University. Dr. Ober has illustrated every Martini book in every edition.

Edwin F. Bartholomew received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and his M.S. from the University of Hawaii. Mr. Bartholomew has taught anatomy and physiology and a wide variety of other science courses (from botany to zoology) at both the secondary and undergraduate levels at historic Lahainaluna High School, the oldest high school west of the Rockies, and Maui Community College. Mr. Bartholomew is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the National Association of Biology Teachers, the National Science Teachers Association, the Hawaii Science Teachers Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Working with Dr. Martini, he has coauthored five undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology, all published by Pearson.

Judi L. Nath is a biology professor at Lourdes College, where she teaches anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.  She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. She is a multiple recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award, granted by Lourdes College to recognize her effective teaching, scholarship, and community service. She is active in many professional organizations, notably the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society (HAPS), where she has served several terms on the board of directors.  Working with Dr. Martini, she has coauthored four undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology, all published by Pearson.
