Features & benefits
  • Unique integrated case approach—This is the first and only counseling theories text that begins each chapter with a case study. Moreover, each case is integrated and elaborated throughout the chapter.
  • Provides students with a concrete, practical context, which helps students understand and envision how each theory's view of human nature and its view of therapy apply to actual clients.
  • Unique presentation of outcome research—Each chapter contains a thorough discussion of the outcome research and the theory-testing research that has been done on the theory.
  • Gender and cultural issues—Each theory is evaluated relative to gender and cultural issues. Theories are also examined from the perspective of sexual orientation.
  • Chapter on Solution Focused Therapy—This theoretical perspective is having a wider and wider influence on the practice of therapy today. Murdoch's is one of very few books to offer a full separate chapter on SFT.
  • Theoretical depth accessibly and engagingly presented—The book presents in enough depth so that students can truly understand each theory (1) counseling theories' underlying assumptions, (2) theories' approaches to counseling, and (3) a balanced evaluation of each theory from the perspective of current research and diversity. It uses integrated case studies and a writing style that is extremely engaging.
