2009 WINNER - Pearson RACI Centenary of Federation Chemistry Educator of the Year Award

Pearson Australia is pleased to announce that the winner of the Pearson RACI Centenary of Federation Chemistry Educator of the Year Award for 2009 is Dr Ian Jamie. Ian was awarded his prize of $3,500 and a trophy at the RACI Awards Dinner in Melbourne on Friday 27 November, 2009. Dr Ian Jamie FRACI CChem is with the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at Macquarie University.

Dr Jamie is a very worthy recipient of this award as seen by the following quote: ‘Dr Ian Jamie is a teacher who is committed to instilling in his students a deep and lasting interest in learning and preparing them for the next stage after their university studies. He teaches chemistry in ways that are adaptive, innovative and that generate a love for the discipline'.

Dr Jamie has been involved with a team of educators with the Advancing Chemistry by Enhancing Learning in the Laboratory (ACELL); a program that has been recognised through a number of awards and the Indigenous Science Education Program which has also received a number of awards.

In his approaches to teaching and learning two quotes sum up his approach:
‘Tell me, I forget; show me, I remember; involve me, I understand’ (Confucius) and ‘The foundation of every state is the education of its youth’ (Diogenes Laetius).

Ian Jamie also finds time to give to the RACI both at state and national level.

This award, aimed to encourage and recognise innovative teaching practices in Chemistry Education, recognises outstanding contributions to teaching in terms of:

• Interest and enthusiasm for teaching
• Promoting student learning
• Imaginative presentation of course material
• Command of the subject matter
• Participation in professional activities and research relating to teaching
